If you’re wondering what to do or what’s new this week in New Mexico, check out my quick list below.

  1. New Mexico Magazine provides this list of things to do every week, so be sure to subscribe to their newsletter. This week’s offerings include an opening at the Albuquerque Museum – an exhibit with one of my favorite photographer’s works. Danny Lyon has captured images all over the world, including iconic images from the civil rights movement. His work in New Mexico is worth a longer look. Here’s his “Llanito New Mexico.”

There’s also an opportunity to be part of a reenactment of the Battle of Columbus, which is when Pancho Villa let an attack on the southern New Mexico town on March 9, 1916, and if that’s not entertainment enough, the UFOXPO has moved from Florida to Roswell. And a couple of other way cool ways to spend your March weekend before the time changes.

2. My podcast guests this week were my favorites so far! My mom and dad, Betty and Kenneth Terry, share their own New Mexico stories, including tales of broomcorn harvest. If you don’t know what broomcorn is, or what’s its like to live for 88 years plus in the same New Mexico county where you were born, you’ll want to take a listen. And this is only part 1 of 2. 3. This time of year makes me think of gardening and gardening makes me think of Stanley Crawford’s book “A Garlic Testament: Seasons on a Small New Mexico Farm.” If you want to study both the rewards and the meditative nature of gardening and learn about life on a northern New Mexico farm, check this one out. And then, when you’re in Santa Fe, spend a Saturday morning at the Farmer’s Market. You’re likely to run into Crawford there, selling some of the varieties of garlic he describes in the book.

And this reminds me – I need to ask Stanley Crawford to be on the podcast. He’s an amazing writer with a talent for bringing rural New Mexico to life on his pages.

4. While we’re waiting for spring to arrive, we’re spending more time streaming our favorite series on television. At my house that means popcorn for dinner, which can mean several different flavors, all made in a saucepan on the stove (no microwave popcorn allowed at my house). Here’s my recipe for our favorite variety, Chimayo Red Chile Popcorn. There’s also a variation with lots of butter, green chile powder, and garlic salt. I’d love to hear about what you’re snacking on during college basketball or reruns of Justified (who doesn’t love a bit of Timothy Olyphant in a hat?).

5. Finally, a bit of shameless plugging of this platform, where we work so hard to promote the place we love most – the Land of Enchantment. Check our our Instagram page @newmexicoblog here: https://www.instagram.com/newmexicoblog/ We’re having a great time telling stories, mostly true, about everything that makes New Mexico what it is – a place that is frequently misunderstood but beloved by its fans.

Happy Friday friends. I hope you find all the enchantment possible in this amazing place I call home. Feel free to email me at ilovenewmexicoblog@gmail.com if you have suggestions for next weeks “5 quick things. . .”
