When I was in college in the late 70s, I traveled from Logan, in northeastern New Mexico, to Las Cruces to attend New Mexico State University. Being a baby girl from a small town made this an exciting time in my life. Part of the adventure was driving the six hour road trip all alone. That travel taught me to love the journey and gave me my early love of driving through New Mexico. I had a Minolta SRT 202 and a bit of a knack for photography from high school yearbook days.
And I had White Sands to look forward to.

I just knew it was a great place to stop and play with my camera, no matter the time of day. Because it’s part of a missile range, there were sometimes roadblocks that held up traffic during missile launches. That gave me an excuse to stop and wander around.
Over half a million visitors came to White Sands last year. Just 16 miles west of Alamogordo, it’s easy to find and hard to resist. If you’re driving by and can keep yourself from entering the park, you’re tougher than me.
