I Love New Mexico

About all things New Mexican

This is a repost (from Feb 10, 2010) of a great recipe I borrowed from Food Network Favorites and then modified. I took this to a potluck recently and everyone wanted the recipe.  I’m suggesting you try it sometime soon.  It’s an easy way to get you green chile fix AND impress your neighbors or co-workers. Although I’m doing my very best to follow Michael Pollan’s Food Rules (see previous post at http://bit.ly/fYbPsT), there are days, especially when you’ve been up to your arse in alligators and you come home and take something out of the freezer (gypsy stew from the  [ Read More ]

I just read a great essay by Geneen Roth.  She’s written a number of books about women and body image and eating, but this essay in “When you Eat At the Refrigerator, Pull Up a Chair” is by far my favorite. I read it every once in a while to remind myself of how I feel about life in general. Her advice is to celebrate every little thing.  Get yourself out of your head (thinking about yesterday, or tomorrow, or what you ate last night that had too many calories, or what you should have said to that guy who took  [ Read More ]

You New Mexicans who are forced to live elsewhere may cuss me this morning, but I’ve been thinking for a while that Sunday would be a great day to use specifically for green chile recipes, ideas, facts.  We are, after all, the land of green chile – our state question is “Red or green?”  So if you’re unlucky enough to be living in Seattle or Maine and you don’t have green chile on hand with which to try my suggestions, I have one word of advice:  http://www.nationwidecandy.com/bueno-foods-mx1-bueno.htm, where you can buy Bueno Foods autumn roast frozen fresh green chile.  Or you  [ Read More ]

Days like this are why we live in New Mexico.  83 degrees, not a breath of wind, a glass-surfaced lake at my backdoor, and posole on the stove.  The only thing that might be more perfect would be a day on the patio at the Mine Shaft Tavern in Madrid looking at the Sangre de Cristos (or maybe on the patio at Kelly’s in Albuquerque, or maybe sitting on the plaza at Mesilla, or on the balcony at the Ore House in Santa Fe. . .you get my drift. . .) . . .this is a perfect day in New Mexico, and I’m  [ Read More ]

We did it!  We went to the Fiery Foods and BBQ Show at the Sandia Casino in Albuquerque last Saturday.  We followed the throngs to the mountain side of the casino hall, slot machines dinging and clicking and making music as we walked by.  There were long lines and butt to belly crowds – it was one of those events where you kept looking over your shoulder and waving at your friends who were 17 people back – luckily I brought TALL friends.  There were the mainstays – Pace Picante Sauce, Blue Bunny ice cream (which we all needed in abundance),  [ Read More ]

Someone commented on my recent post – New Mexico Breakfast and El Pinto Green Chile Sauce – that while his family liked the green sauce, they loved the red chile sauce.  So, of course I had to try it.  I’m never going to miss a chance to have at least a taste, and then usually another bite and another, of some great New Mexican food.  I had leftover pork roast in the freezer that I cooked last week –  I thawed and chopped it into bite size pieces.  I put it into a shallow container and covered it with the El Pinto  [ Read More ]
