About all things New Mexican

August - 23 - 2016

One of my posts in this blog was all about cooking calabacitas for the California nieces, and it dawned on me that the easiest way for everyone, especially someone new to this cuisine, to prepare traditional New Mexican dishes is to own one of my favorite cookbooks – Simply Simpatico, from the Junior League of Albuquerque (find at http://www.jlabq.org/ – $19.95). My copy was given to me by my pal Patty Williams, back in 1988, and the pages are, quite appropriately, smeared with evidence of red chile sauce, avocado, batter from chile rellenos.  I’ve USED this cookbook. Especially during the years that I was  [ Read More ]

This is a repost of an old article I wrote when I lived in northeastern New Mexico. Both of the images here are Beatles posters that I have hanging either in my bathroom or in the hallway on the whitewashed walls of my Santa Fe home.  I’ve thought about this post a lot in the past several weeks. I’m now selling homes for Keller Williams Santa Fe, and I show amazingly beautiful, architecturally pleasing homes every day of the week. I’ve often wondered whether my Beatles posters would be appropriate in those homes. Most of the walls in the  [ Read More ]

I’m a fan of Michael Pollan’s Food Rules. If our grandparents wouldn’t recognize it, we shouldn’t eat it. That’s his advice. And baking my own corn chips from locally produced corn tortillas seems to get pretty close to that ideal. I’m all out of chips, as I have been for several weeks (okay, I refuse to buy a bag of tortilla chips because I’ll eat them all in one sitting – I’m a chips and salsa junky.  Any questions?) and now I’ve become addicted to my own home-baked corn chips.  And I thought you just might enjoy knowing how I  [ Read More ]

New Mexico State Fair, New Mexico Expo Rodeo

Yes, it’s a repost.  About one of my favorite events in New Mexico. Something magical happens in New Mexico the moment the Quay County Fair opens.  The hot, dry, blistery summer that has had us all gasping (especially this summer, but as I recall, in all summers past) through August waiting for some relief breaks and  it suddenly starts to feel like fall.  I know intellectually that this is a product of the calendar being closer to September than July, but all my life I’ve equated it with the Fair.  One morning during the County Fair, you wake up and  [ Read More ]

The rules of blogging are very clear.  Never, ever, ever apologize for not posting.  But I have to say to those of you who are faithful followers of I Love New Mexico – Sorry.  I’ve had some niggling health issues, and I’m working very hard on them, but that doesn’t keep me from being a devoted follower of everything New Mexican.  I’m back, mostly, and I plan to get on track with posting about the things we love best here in the Land of Enchantment. I decided to create a new feature for 2013 – my list of New  [ Read More ]

I was leaving the Range Cafe a couple of nights ago after eating dinner with Johanna, after an afternoon of searching for a bridesmaid dress for her brother Zachary’s wedding. As I wandered out the front door, I grabbed a copy of the Alibi, which just happens to be my favorite publication in New Mexico. Little did I know that I had in my hand the 20th Anniversary Issue of the paper that I’ve always wondered if I’m hip enough to read. I didn’t have time to pick this particular issue up until today at lunch when I took a  [ Read More ]

I’m going to post some gorgeous New Mexico photos here, hoping that they will inspire you to go to http://www.abqthemag.com/bestofsurvey2012a.php#people and consider voting for me, Bunny Terry of I Love New Mexico, as your favorite blogger. Even if I’m not your absolute all-time favorite, am I perhaps close to the top of the list for New Mexico? Thanks to all my readers who make this blog one of the most fun things I do.  The only problem is that its gotten me so many blogging clients that I tend to leave this one until last when I’m writing! Happy Thursday.  There’s a  [ Read More ]

It’s summertime in New Mexico, which means that every afternoon a cloud (or ten or twenty) starts gathering steam in the southwestern sky and threatens to (we hope, hope, hope) dump rain before nightfall.  For those of you living elsewhere, let me tell you about New Mexico summer clouds – they’re not for the faint of heart, they’re not small and delicate and wispy, but they are amazingly beautiful, especially when the evening light catches them around the edges. Yesterday I drove home from Lubbock and arrived at the caprock south of San Jon at about 7:20, the perfect time  [ Read More ]

I just read what I posted last Sunday, and I damn near made myself cry.  Okay, I did make myself cry.  Last week I wrote a blog post on how both our high school basketball teams were on their way to state tournament, and the last line was “Hopefully next week at this time I’ll be posting on how we won the championship games at the Pit” Well, guess what.  I’m here, after five days in Albuquerque and several heart-stopping quarters of basketball, after two meals at the Frontier and one evening at the dollar movies, after countless hugs from old friends  [ Read More ]

As of about 7:30 p.m. last night, it became official.  Both Logan Longhorns varsity basketball teams – boys and girls – are headed to Albuquerque next week for the State Basketball Tournament.  The girls won against Coronado Friday night and the boys beat Des Moines last night, and at the end of both games the Logan crowd flooded the court, lifting players in the air, crying, cheering.  I don’t know if this has happened before – both Logan High teams headed to State at the same time, but I do know that basketball fever has now reached its highest pitch in  [ Read More ]
