Here’s what I ate for lunch yesterday. In Tucumcari. A combination plate with an enchilada the size of a large burrito smothered in delicious red chile, a taco with a fresh homemade taco shell, and a chile relleno smothered in perfectly made green chile.
Not a big deal, right? The sort of meal you get every day in Albuquerque or Santa Fe or Las Cruces, right? Well, let me tell you, it was a big deal to me and my friends – it has been YEARS since someone in Tucumcari (or Quay County for that matter) took the time to make a fresh chile relleno that tasted like the one I had yesterday.
We ate at Raul’s Restaurant, which is in the old Ken’s Ice Cream location at 1804 E. Tucumcari Blvd (that’s Route 66). It’s a recently new endeavor of the adorable Destinie Sena and her sweetie. Destinie just happens to be a recent graduate of Logan High School, so we feel a little proprietary about her already. When one of our clients came in the real estate office raving about the great food, Tj and Robin and I decided we’d heard enough. We had to see for ourselves. So we drove 24 miles to have lunch.
Well worth it. I sorta wish I would have ordered the 3 chile relleno plate (3 with rice and beans, a heaping serving, for only $6.50), but then I would have missed that great taco and that huge enchilada (my combo plate was $6.75). I want to go back for the smothered burrito, which Dave swears is the best he’s had in years. They have a breakfast special (served all day) that consists of two eggs, choice of meat, hash browns and two pancakes for. . .wait for it. . .ONLY $3.50. And chile over the top is only an additional $.50. And for a hardcore hangover cure, she has menudo. This is looking so promising. . .I am so excited!
Folks, this is what we’ve been waiting for in Quay County. Really delicious homemade Mexican food, especially those chile rellenos. . .I want to go back today for more.
The takeout menu says “free delivery.” When I read that aloud yesterday, Destinie laughed and said, “But not to Logan!” Too bad.
If you’re on I-40 traveling through eastern New Mexico, get off the freeway at Mountain Road and head north to Tucumcari Boulevard. Turn left at the light and watch for the Ken’s Ice Cream sign on your immediate left. It’s right next door to the Rockin ‘Y’. Have the rellenos or the practically free breakfast special. Or the smothered burrito. Or something completely different. If you’re a total dweeb you can have a burger or a BLT. Let me know how they were. . and tell Destinie we sent you.
Or order out – (505) 461-1880 – they’ll deliver in Tucumcari!
