I’ve always lamented the fact that people who drive through New Mexico on the freeways, especially I-40, miss the best part of the state. In fact, they see some of the ugliest places in New Mexico. If you want to get really metaphysical, you could use that as a metaphor for life – if you keep moving through the fastest, easiest routes to your destination. you’re going to miss the high points.
If you don’t want to get metaphysical, at least consider occasionally getting off the freeway, even if just for a minute, and venturing further afield than the exit ramps. Here’s what I saw when I got off the freeway yesterday on my way to Albuquerque. Yes, it was May 1st. And yes, it was snowing. Big, wet flakes from Santa Rosa to Albuquerque. Beautiful.
I’m thinking this could be a weekly post – let’s get off the freeway and see what else New Mexico has to offer other than Stuckey’s and a McDonalds every 70 miles. You might be surprised. . .even those of you who have lived here all your lifes.
