Johanna and I had lunch this past Saturday at  Barelas Coffee House in Albuquerque (1502 Fourth St., S.W., 505-843-7577).  I had the carne adovada plate, she had the carne adovada burrito.

I used to always have the posole – this is truly the best place in New Mexico to get posole, and with a side of chicharrones (yeah, I know – chicharrones are against the cardiologist law of life), a bowl of onions and a slice or two of lemon, the posole is delicious.  Perfect.
But the carne adovada.  Wow!  I’ve been on a search for the best carne adovada in New Mexico for all of my adult life.  Las Cruces, Farmington, Ruidoso, Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Lemitar (yeah, great carne adovada in Lemitar), Socorro.  I’ve tried carne adovada at every stop, and I’m afraid the search may be over. 

Barelas Coffee House is by far one of my favorite restaurants in the world.  President Obama had lunch there the last time he was in town.  There’s always a line of people (predominantly locals) waiting for a table – don’t worry, it’s well worth the wait.  The waitresses always treat you like you’re an old friend, and I swear there’s no turnover – the same waitress has waited on me for decades.  Be sure to sit on the patio if weather permits.

Our food photos aren’t as perfect as they might have been – we were so excited to get our plates that we forgot to take a picture until after we had dug in.  Now that’s a sign of a great restaurant.  Here’s just one review from the Alibi http://bit.ly/bOy51K.

It’s good! It’s greasy….in a good way. The waitresses all talk to you like they are your friends and have known you forever. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Deluxe Huevos Rancheros with Red Chili. I don’t live in Albuquerque anymore and would kill to have Barelas in San Jose. We visited twice on our recent 5 day trip.

I love Barelas Coffee House.  I think their carne adovada may well be better than almost anything (sex?  money?  well, really close. . .)  I’m dying to know where you get your favorite carne adovada.  Because if I haven’t been there, it’s looking like an excuse for a road trip. . .And while I’m on the road, you get down to 4th and Bridge and let me know what you think.
