If you’re not already a fan, I run an incredibly successful Facebook page that was originally created to promote this blog. It is appropriately called “I Love New Mexico” and from October 2011, when it was created with about 200 fans, it’s grown of over 6,400 fans. The growth isn’t because I’m such a brilliant Facebook strategist. It’s attributable to the fact that lots of folks do actually LOVE New Mexico. And they love the images I find, from photos of dive bars south of Las Cruces to the breathtaking majesty of Ghost Ranch and Abiquiu. I seldom post an [ Read More ]

Repost in honor of National Pie Day. I wrote this for a good friend of mine. You might like to try it yourself. For good fortune in 2013, head for the Continental Divide and Pie Town in western New Mexico. If you don’t love pie, go ahead and shoot yourself, because there’s no purpose to life without pie (or so they say in Pie Town). In fact, if you don’t love pie, this fortune may be exactly what you need in 2011, because the purpose is to show you something new, exciting and unexpected. If your schedule permits, plan your visit to [ Read More ]
I just wrote a fun blog post for Two Casitas at www.twocasitas.com/santafeblog about what one must absolutely NOT miss when visiting the Plaza. Looks like we’re going to do a series. And you know me. I had to start with food. If you’ve never had a Chile Relleno Omelette, or the best posole in Santa Fe, or Green Chile Meatloaf, read on. Here’s a portion of my post for Wendy at Two Casitas. And yes, I’ve written before about the Plaza Café. Love it. I get to write over and over about the things I love in New Mexico, don’t [ Read More ]
This post originally appeared a couple of weeks ago at the Two Casitas blog I write for Wendy Kapp. One of the absolute best things about going to Santa Fe is the eating. I agree that it’s not the only thing worthwhile about visiting – there’s the Opera and the Lensic and the Georgia O’Keefe Museum and the Plaza and the Railyard and the hiking and the skiing and Ten Thousand Waves and music at El Farol on a Saturday night. . . There are a lot of good reasons to visit Santa Fe. But the food. . .just thinking [ Read More ]
As you may know, I now have a sweet little gig writing blog posts for Two Casitas Santa Fe Vacation Rentals. I have all of you folks to thank – you’ve shown such interest in this blog that you convinced Wendy Kapp of Two Casitas to hire me. It’s quite a treat to get to write about a place and properties that I love. One of the tasks on my list for Wendy is to find different ways to enjoy a weekend in Santa Fe (dirty job, but somebody’s gotta do it) – from the “Opera Season and Canyon Road” weekend to the “Santa Fe [ Read More ]
When I started writing this blog in December 2009, I had a couple of very simple goals. I wanted to write about New Mexico, land that I love (that phrase always makes me feel like I should break into song), and I wanted to record some of my thoughts for my kids. It seemed simpler than writing a memoir that might or might not get published. Mostly I just wanted to feed my need to write something every day. What I didn’t foresee was how this blog would lead to acquaintances and friendships with so many people from so many [ Read More ]
This is a repost from last year, but I wanted to be sure you all knew that if you want to have dinner at Season’s Restaurant in Old Town this year, they’re doing the Christmas Eve Prix Fixe dinner again – amazing menu at their website and dinner is only $35 per person. This is a memorable way to spend Christmas Eve, and depending on your seating time, you can wander Old Town before or after. . . December 22, 2010: Tis the season of giving and generosity and good wishes, and knowing that, I truly hate to make all of you envious. [ Read More ]
I’m reposting this from last year – seems like a great time to remind you of great food in out-of-the-way places. If you can’t get to your grandma’s for Thanksgiving dinner, go to Velma’s for lunch instead in the next week or so. You’ll love it! If you’re like me and you love good food, and if it’s been a long time since you had a home-cooked meal like your Granny Terry used to make, complete with breaded pork chops or fried chicken and collard greens and mashed potatoes and fresh okra and biscuits and gravy and cobbler (wow! I should have [ Read More ]
Fall is my absolute favorite time of year in New Mexico. Cooler nights, green chile roasting, corn mazes, high school football. And more green chile roasting. There are green chile purists out there who will argue that Hatch green chile is the only way to go, that the best chile in the world is grown in the southern Rio Grande Corridor of New Mexico. I’m a fan, don’t get me wrong, but I have to say that, consistently, the best green chile I’ve ever put in my freezer came from Corrales. And that green chile always came from Wagner Farms. It’s [ Read More ]
Repost from March 2010 – Absolutely loooooove this place. Holy shit! Sometimes you go to dinner at a place in 1995 and you’re blown away. And then you try it again in 2000, and although you’ve been there before, like the week before, you’re still blown away. And then you go again in 2005, and although you’ve chosen to live elsewhere, you know that the food at this place will be consistently amazingly good. Crazy but true. Fast forward to 2010. I am now at least 18 years into my love affair with El Patio in Albuquerque on Harvard SE [ Read More ]
